Jimi Hendrix died at age 27. That fate had befallen Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones the previous year, who was floating lifeless in his swimming pool. Just two weeks after Hendrix, the hippie icon Janis Joplin put an end to her life with alcohol and heroin. Jim Morrison, the beautiful, gloomy, self-destructive singer of the Doors, one of the most important bands in early rock history, died in a Paris hotel room in 1971. They were all only 27 years old - the whispering about a "Club 27" began.
